RULES FOR THE USE OF INSIGNIA AND DECORATIONS

Insignia and Decorations can only be used with the habit of the Order, with formal dress (tails) and with business casual dress (under very specific conditions).

HABIT | FORMAL | INFORMAL |

In official ceremonies of the Order, both religious and civilian, all the Knights and Dames use the badge pendant of the Order of Saint Eulalia with the habit and no other.

Only one badge pendant, one grand collar and one sash can be used at a time (for those who have been awarded more than once). In all official ceremonies, both religious and civilian, the insignia of the Order of Saint Eulalia precedes all the others.

All decorations and breast badges are positioned in order from the right to the left, on the left hand side (over the heart). The Order of Saint Eulalia precedes all the others in all its official ceremonies, both civilian and religious.

Breast badges are used in a maximum of four at each time, on the left hand side (over the heart): a) forming a lozenge (three lines of 1, 1+1, 1) with the most important decoration on top followed by the others in accordance to their importance; b) forming a triangle, with the most important decoration on top and the other two underneath, according to their importance; c) one on top of the other, the top one being the most important one.

The insignia and decorations from other Orders, when properly authorized, follow the insignia of the Order of Saint Eulalia. In ceremonies where a Head of State, a Prime Minister, or some other State Dignitary is present, it is courteous to place the decorations from that country first.

Together with the badge pendant and the breast badges, all the other decorations can also be placed on the left hand side as miniatures. These are often suspended by a small metallic bar placed on top of the chest on the left hand side in one or two rows maximum. In Portugal and in the official ceremonies of the Order of Saint Eulalia they should be placed in the following order: Order of the Tower & Sword, Order of Christ, Order of Saint Benedict of Avis, Order of Saint James (Santiago) of the Sword, Order of Our Lady of the Immaculate of Vila Vizoza, Royal Arch Confraternity of Saint Mary of Braga, Order of the Golden Fleece, Order of the Garter, Order of Malta, Order of the Holy Sepulcher, other national (Portuguese) decorations, and all the others according to the alphabetical order of their countries.

In official ceremonies outside of the Portuguese Territory the Chief of Protocol of the Chancellery should be inquired.
